How the two models work
A subscription tool is a reseller. It holds a provider key, sends your requests on it, and charges a monthly price designed to cover its heaviest users plus margin, which means light users subsidise heavy ones. The benefit is simplicity: sign up, pay, use.
A BYOK tool sends requests using a key you created at the provider. You are billed by the provider, per token, at published rates. Doing the arithmetic honestly
This page does not quote provider prices because they change often. The token cost guide explains how to estimate a task, and the free calculator lets you plug in current rates. The general shape is stable, though: a resume rewrite sends a few thousand tokens and receives under two thousand; a subtitle lookup is a few hundred. At any recent price for mid-tier models those are fractions of a cent each. The break-even where a flat fee becomes cheaper requires sustained daily heavy use of the most expensive models, which is unusual for study and job-search tools.
What BYOK costs you that is not money
Setup and responsibility. You need an account at a provider, a payment method on file, and a generated key. You should set a monthly spending cap (every provider offers one) and you should treat the key as a password. RYUN stores keys encrypted and never displays them again after entry, but the account is yours. For some people that is a reasonable trade for lower cost and model choice; for others the flat fee is worth the simplicity. Both are legitimate.
